TOP 4 STARTUPS TRENDS IN 2022

Friday, 14/01/2022 14:27 (GTM +7)

What business ideas and industries will be trending in 2022? What unique start-up models need to consider?

In 2020-2021, the start-up industry has changed a lot because of the influence of the Covid 19 epidemic, which has been controlled until now, but it has not ended completely and is at risk of any outbreak.

Adapting and flexibly changing to match trends are very important for startups. Let’s find out some trend suggestions of Vietnam’s startup ecosystem in 2022 with ITI Fund!

1. Healthtech

The field of digital health is “like a duck to water” and has potential opportunities for startups, because consumers are ready to receive new technology on mobile platforms and take care of themselves. Health is one of the top priorities due to the Covid-19 epidemic.

In which, telemedicine is expected to thrive in Vietnam. This uses technology to support lower-level medical examination and create an unlimited medical network.

Besides telemedicine, the solution to digitize health reports at hospitals is also of interest, as it helps the medical industry to reduce the huge amount of paperwork and make the process of monitoring and health care easier and more effective.

However, medical technology startups still face common difficulties in terms of capital, strategy and experience. The companionship of experts, investment funds and accelerator programs is very helpful.

2. EdTech

The online education market is attracting startups because the demand for online learning has increased sharply in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and social distancing.

This is also a “gold mine” of investors because “Outstanding search trends in 2021” of Google shows that 5/10 most searched keywords in 2021 related to online teaching and learning tools.

We saw the biggest edtech deal in 2021 is EQuest Education Group, which has raised $100 million from KKR – one of the world’s largest investment companies. Meanwhile, ELSA – English learning app also received $15 million in Series B funding.

In addition, other Vietnamese edtechs also received investments such as MindX ($3 million), Coder School and Clevai ($2.1 million), Marathon ($1.5 million)…

The Director of Nextrans Vietnam also said that the level of payment of parents in our country for education is quite high, ranging from 25-30% of total income, so this is one of the most potential markets in Southeast Asia, but currently there is no ‘dominant player’ (the company that dominates the market), so the opportunity for startups to become unicorn is still very large.

3. Fintech

The number of Vietnamese startups in the fintech field has grown year by year. The whole market had only 39 companies in 2015, but in 2021, there are more than 150 companies operating.

This is also the leading field in terms of total venture capital in November 2021, with two deals worth over 100 million dollars: MoMo and VNLife.

Asset management, personal finance, investment, insurance,… are also considered to be the new growth drivers of the market. Although the proportion is still at 7.5%, this will be an opportunity for many startups to enter the lack of supply.

Therefore, this trend may become a vibrant development segment, attracting a lot of startups soon.

4. E-commerce

Besides fintech, e-commerce is the field that attracts capital in 2021 with the largest contribution belonging to Tiki, whose Series E funding round has reached 258 million dollars by AIA. Telio – a B2B e-commerce platform is also invested 22.5 million dollars by VNG (Vietnam’s first unicorn).

In terms of size, the Vietnamese e-commerce market in 2021 has grown by 53% compared to 2020 and reached 13 billion USD, according to Google, Temasel, Bain & Company.

We also see the changes of Vietnam’s e-commerce industry, such as transforming itself to accessing essential food during the social distancing of Covid19.

The “four-horse race” between Shopee, Lazada, Tiki and Sendo in personalizing user experience and accelerating revenue is exalted. Online payment and sustainable shopping are also seen as trends of this industry.
